Southeast 4
Cumberland Island National Park
A unique preserved undeveloped piece of the original coast at the border of Georgia and Florida.
The island was owned by the Carnegie family at the turn of the XIX and XX century and subsequently donated to the National Parks Service by the descendants. So now it's ours, paid by our taxes, might as well enjoy it!!
The expedition starts with a 45 min boat ride, no cars, only passengers and quite a few backpackers.
As soon as we land on the island we get immersed in the unique landscape of the Maritime Forest. Many palms only 5-6 ft high and big live oak trees canopy above. Plus lots of beautiful draperies of Spanish moss of course. It is a gorgeous hiking trail!!!
This island had several huge properties from the Carnegie dynasty, they ended up donating them to the public. Trees are IMMENSE. Can you see Muriel above?
We find a nice camping area and enjoy the good weather. Such a contrast from the beginning of our trip! From 40F to 70F!
Oh! And there's also wild horses on this island!
