Southeast 1
We’re retired, early, and Jeremy is home schooled! We are free to wander the world. Our first adventure is a road trip in the south east of the US. Six weeks starting February 22, 2018 going slowly down the Atlantic coast from our Connecticut home to Florida see good old friends there. Then hike a portion of the Florida trail to experiment our ability to be autonomous with only what our backpacks can carry for up to six days. If we survive that, then we'll head to New Orleans before going up the Mississippi to Memphis and curving east again to go back home with a stop to visit other good old buddies in South Carolina.
We call this “becoming nomads”. Jeremy our rebellious teen calls this becoming hobos!!! That's part of his education. Maybe he'll decide to get his highschool degree and go to college at last!
That's it! We packed the Subaru with camping and backpacking gear plus food and all we think we need for the next 6 weeks and we hit the road.
First stop: Princeton University. Muriel guided us to see Einstein's old house. She's fulfilling a childhood dream. See below.
Below it's an Ivy League wall.
After Princeton we head to Atlantic City to visit Jeff and Maria. Jeff was with Muriel at ENAC college back in the 1990's! Its been years we haven't seen each other. We have a great evening chatting and eating "tacos grande"!
Next day we head to Cape May to take the 1&1/2 hour ferry to Lewe. It crosses the Delaware and today it's empty. No wonder the temperature outside is in the upper 30sF and there's wind to make it feel in the 20sF!!!
We then drive to Assateague Island National Seashore which is known for its herds of wild horses.
We play it tough and prepare our backpacks in the cold, and then start hiking with shells, tops and bottoms! It's only 2 miles but it's a sandy path along the beach.
We see indeed a few horses and when we arrive at the campsite there's a bigger herd nearby in the marsh lands.
We manage to make a fire but a rain shower quickly sends us to the tent to make dinner and sleep. It's cold and humid but we sleep beautifully the 3 of us packed in our small igloo tent.
